Cliff Diseker, Master Gunsmith at Lone Star Gunsmithing in Princeton, Texas prefers H-series Cerakote because it is heat resistant up to 1200 degrees Fahrenheit and has more color options. He also uses it on parts that are going to get hot, like firearm slides, frames and barrels.
What is Cerakote?
Cerakote is a ceramic-infused coating that can be applied to any firearm. It is resistant to abrasion and moisture, which keeps your gun from rusting. It also comes in a variety of colors to allow you to customize your firearm.
Before the Cerakote is applied, the firearm must be cleaned and prepped. This process involves bead blasting the firearm to roughen up the surfaces and remove any old bluing or previous coatings. The gun parts are then cleaned with acetone to make sure they’re free of grease and other debris.
The Cerakote is then sprayed onto the gun and baked in an oven. The final thickness is about a mil, but can be thicker or thinner depending on the application and series of the coating. The H-series is recommended for firearms, as it offers superior abrasion and corrosion resistance. It can also withstand high temperatures, which is useful for firearms used in rapid-fire or sustained shooting scenarios.
