Cerakote Finish for 1911 Pistols
The 1911 is the go-to sidearm for most concealed carriers. This pistol has a lot to offer, including a solid trigger and great value.
Cerakote is a ceramic finish that provides corrosion, chemical and abrasion resistance to metal gun parts. It has been shown to outperform bluing and parkerizing in laboratory tests.
1. Durability
Cerakote is extremely durable, and like bluing, nickel-plating, and parkerizing, it can protect your gun from corrosion. But unlike those finishes, it can also be done in a wide range of colors and patterns. And it can be applied to any part of your firearm that can be baked, including polymer and plastic components.
Developed by NIC Industries, cerakote is a thin-film ceramic coating that offers resistance to abrasion, chemicals, and corrosion. The finish is applied to the firearm using a pressurized sprayer and then cured at high temperature. It can be used on steel, aluminum, and plastic/polymer parts, and it can even be textured to create custom looks.
The durability of a Cerakote finish has been demonstrated by the results of Corrosive testing, Taber Abrasion Testing, and Flexibility/Durability Testing. The Corrosive test results showed that the Cerakote finish outperformed KG Gunkote and Duracoat, with no sign of wear after 385 hours of immersion in salt spray. The Taber Abrasion test results showed that a Cerakote finish can resist abrasion up to 12,000 cycles, or more than 20 years of normal use. And the Flexibility/Durability test results showed that a Cerakote can withstand a 180deg Mandrel Bend and 160 inch-lbs impact without cracking, distortion, or loss of adhesion.
2. Customization
The 1911 pistol has a rabid fan base that will not put up with any shortcomings. A gunsmith that specializes in 1911s can make some real improvements for you.
Cerakote, developed by NIC Industries, is a thin ceramic coating that is durable and offers a wide range of colors and finishes. It is also highly customizable with stencils, patterns, engraving and letters to create your own design. It is resistant to abrasion, corrosion and chemicals and looks great.
In addition to the standard GI-style controls, the Night Stalker includes an ambidextrous thumb safety, a grip safety, a half-cock hammer notch and a passive internal firing pin block safety. The ejection port is lowered and flared for improved ejection. The slide is forged from carbon steel, rather than being cast like many other 1911s.
The front sight is a Novak-style 3-dot arrangement, and the rear sight is drift adjustable. The barrel is a standard GI type, as is the recoil spring and barrel bushing. The slide is fitted with a pair of black G10 grip panels grooved in what the company calls a Sunburst pattern. The bottom of the grip panels has been rounded to reduce grip printing. The Night Stalker comes with two eight-round blued steel magazines from Mec-Gar USA.
3. Security
Cerakote is a thin film ceramic coating that enhances a firearm’s physical properties such as hardness, chemical resistance and lubricity. It also provides abrasion/wear resistance and can protect against corrosion and oxidation. In addition, a cerakote finish acts as a dry film lubricant, which helps keep the gun cleaner and easier to maintain.
The cerakote process involves applying the finish to the gun parts in layers. Piet thoroughly cleans the gun pieces before applying the first layer. He then carefully inspects the surface for scratches, unevenness or other imperfections. The gun parts are then baked in an oven at 180 degrees. During this process, the Cerakote will bond to the metal and polymers in the piece. Once the gun part has cured, it can be reassembled.
